THIAR [hiəɾɣ] (pronounced like the word “here”/“hear”) is the Gaeilge word for West. This EP is a collage of sounds recorded during a residency on the island of Inis Oirr; the smallest of the Aran Islands off the coast of Galway.

In response to his time in residency, Ian recorded natural sounds of the island; rain-battered rock fields, the rattling of fences and gates during a tempest, wind whistling through the gaps in the island’s meandering dry stone walls - all of which he later blended with other musical elements. The completion of THIAR was a result of endlessly reinventing the multi-track stems to create new unpredictable musical pathways.

“Assembling all the elements into this EP felt like I was revisiting Inis Oirr. Melodies feel submerged in texture and noise as if they’re surrounded by the expanse of the ocean. The unbroken flow of THIAR carries the experience of being on a small, barren island in the North Atlantic” says Ian.

THIAR also features heritage/archival recordings. The album credits detail the samples of Sean-nós singing, poetry, and keening sampled in this EP.
